Buy the right bike and you’re not just giving the gift of a bike, but the gift of cycling. So pick good!
- Our kids bikes buying guide has a great overview of the sizes and types of bike you should consider for your child.
- The size of the bike is as important for kids as it is for adults, so follow our sizing guide to help you get the right fit.
- Don’t be tempted to buy a bike for your child to grow into. A bike thats too big for them is difficult to control and can be dangerous. This is meant to fun remember!
- The difference you’ll see in price is down to a couple of different factors. Frame material is important. That steel monster is cheap because it’s heavy as hell. Get an alloy frame if you can and your child will thank you for it.
- Before kids start to pedal, you can either go for stabilisers, or even better they can learn to balance on a ‘balance bike’ like the Ridgeback Scoot. A great way for your child to start to trust their own sense of balance quickly.
- A good general tip is to trust the bike brands that make good adult bikes. They tend to take hte same care over their childrens bikes too. Specialized, Giant, Scott and Ridgeback make some great adult bikes, and their the brands that we put our kids on too.
- Make sure they ride wearing a helmet. There are some awesome kids helmets around at the moment (a world away from the mushroom lids of our youth). Check out the Bell Fraction for proof.
- Once you've got the bike and the helmet - checkout our guide to cycling with children. Essential tips and links to get you started.
