Yesterday's rest day gave everyone a chance to reflect on what must go down as the day the Tour blew open.
With their credentials firmly laid down after a great series of time trials and a dominant team time trial the tour is now really Contador's to defend after his awesome display of climbing on Sunday. It's now up to the others to attack him.
Contador beating Armstrong and the rest of the field into submission is all well and good, but to be honest it was expected by everyone apart from the biggest Lance Armstrong fans (our boss is not really talking much at the moment). Contador just showed he is the best climber in the world. His huge acceleration and bouncy balletic ride up to the Verbier summit finish proved that beyond a doubt.
For us, and for just about everyone else in the cycling world the real shock came from Bradley Wiggins. The guy's been a track cyclist for the last ten years! Watching him climb in the Alps with the very best of them was a revelation. His post stage interview, where he talked about himself in the third person and talked about going for a beer just confirmed our best suspicions. A bit barmy, but the best GC rider to come from these shores in years.
It's official, we love the guy - and can't wait to see him put the hammer down on the final time trial.
