EL-600RC Single Shot Review
I bought a new light a couple of weeks ago. Until then I'd been relying on an old head light LED (it lit 10 metres ahead of you) and a couple of safety lights. Great for being seen on the road, but the cause of some seriously scary near misses. The worst being when I was cycling home from work in the dark and suddenly and suddenly found my self surrounded by a herd of cows. Safe to say that at the fifteen odd miles an hour I was doing I would have come off worse than the cow.
That and several other incidents (mostly involving hedges and ditches) convinced me to stop being such a cheapskate and splash out on something that was definitely needed.
I asked some of my more knowledgeable colleagues what the recommended, they spent some time asking me what kind of stuff I'd be using it for, no I wouldn't be doing too much night riding in Afan and no I didn't need one that would allow me to see in a snowstorm (they get up to some pretty weird stuff). I commute/tour mostly on my bike, so I just wanted the most reliable light for my money.
My boss ended up recommending the Cateye EL-610RC Single Shot Plus Front Light to me. Telling me that they were just about the best commuting lights on the market and for for the price, a bargain.
I already had enough safety lights to satisfy any self respecting
christmas tree so I just bought a front light, made sure it was
charged and clipped it on.
I've never really had a decent light, I've always just ridden in the day to be honest, but with this new light my feeble excuses aren't going to wash: it was honestly brilliant. You can find other reviews in cycling mags banging on about how good this light is and for a good reason. Incredibly easy to use, stupidly easy to set up (I don't say that lightly, even this genius had it on his bike in under two minutes), and most important of all reliable. I'm not sure how much it's supposed to be waterproof, but I'm guessing very, as living in Swansea we have no shortage of test ground for wet days and it has admirably never even looked like fading on those soggy Swansea nights.
Thanks to it's fancy concentrated light technology, it's lit my way home more than I needed to be honest and gave me a new confidence about my night riding. It's allowed me to cycle home at night and even begin taking extended night rides and drastically reduced my fear of cows. And lets face it you can't ask more of a bicycle light than that.
